CASE STUDY
Georgetta moved to the UK and separated from her abusive husband, leaving her very isolated.
Georgetta felt so overwhelmed with so much happening at the same time. The father of her child didn’t want to help, so she also found herself very isolated and in financial difficulty.
Georgetta said “I was feeling very desperate because the baby was coming and I didn’t have anything, I didn’t know where to go to ask for help or even if I was deserving of help. In my country asking for help is seen as weakness. When I spoke to my midwife about how worried I was about my future she suggested a referral to Home Start Suffolk. I didn’t know anything about them or what they could do but I was happy to have some help.”
The midwife told Georgetta about Home Start, and explained they may be able to help and provide support adjusting to a new routine and help with some of the items needed for the new baby. She was soon matched with volunteer Ana, who assured Georgetta they would do everything they could to help get ready for the baby.
Volunteer, Ana explained what support Home-Start could provide and also directed Georgetta to other organizations and services that could help. Georgetta contacted the local Baby bank, and were able to help provide lots of baby items. Georgetta said ‘I couldn’t believe it. My eyes watered when I saw the travel system, clothes, nappies, baby bath and so many more’.
Georgetta was also given a slow cooker and access to a group to learn how to use it. She didn’t know what a slow cooker was until Ana explain it, and now feels confident preparing meals.
“I feel more confident in bringing my baby into the world knowing that there are organizations like Home Start around.”
